With Windows 11 coming out, you may find that you are unable to upgrade to it because of some of the system requirements.Sure you’ll be able to use Windows 10 for little while longer, but eventually you will have to do something drastic, like upgrade the machine or you could give the world of Linux a try.
Which Distribution Should be Your First Taste of Linux?
One of the most stable and reliable flavours of Linux out there is Ubuntu. If you search the web for best Linux Distributions for beginners, you will always find Ubuntu on the list and for good reason.
Community Support
As one of the oldest Distributions out there, Ubuntu has a thriving and helpful community to help you if you get stuck with how to do something.
Elegant Design
Since Ubuntu 18.04 (aka Bionic Beaver), it has been using the GNOME 3 desktop with some slight tweaks that make it easier to use. Instead of only having the GNOME Dash for opening applications, the developers added a handy dock to the left edge the the desktop where Favorites are pinned. While this may take a bit of getting used to, after a few hours of use it will seem second nature to you. The intuitive design has an almost zero learning curve.
Tons of Apps, Just a Click Away
Straight out of the gate, you will find some great apps installed that will take over what you used to use on Windows:
- Office suite – LibreOffice
- Web browser – Firefox
- Email client – Thunderbird
- Webcam software – Cheese
- A calculator, text editor, and more…
Need something else, like all modern operating systems, Ubuntu comes with an app store, the sweet thing is… most of these are free! If it didn’t get installed “out of the box,” then look here and you’ll find what you are looking for.
Ease of Install
Just follow the instructions on the website on how create your Live DVD or USB Stick, back up your must keep data from your Windows computer and go for it. Remember to do that backup, once you begin the installation your data will be gone forever.
Final Words About Switching to Linux
If you are a gamer, this switch may not be for you. Linux isn’t even looked at by most game developers at the moment, the market isn’t profitable for them. But you are not totally without some game options from Unity and Steam, including Dota 2, Kerbal Space Program, Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Borderlands: THe Pre-Sequel. But if getting things done for your home office needs, browsing the web, or even watching Netflix is what your after, you’ll be fine. I run Ubuntu on my laptop and can edit graphics, video, and articles on it with ease. If a new Windows 11 compatible desktop or laptop is not in your budget, give this a try when the time comes.
