The world is on fire and no one can save me but you…
The way a single song or chord can bounce around the brain on repeat.
The way a face or name can do the same.
It has been said, “Where words fail, music speaks.”
But maybe music can bypass sound?
The way birds in flight orchestrate waves we cannot see.
The way stars remind us there is more than just us and that we once were them.
And again we will be.
The way a smell can transport you to a memory.
The way we forget the color of someone’s eyes but never the way they made us feel.
Maybe all of life is music and we forgot to listen along the way.
Everything burns.
The world is on fire and no one…
–Mel Ann
Life, in its rawest form, is music. It’s the rhythm of our heartbeat, the melody in a child’s laugh, the bass drop in a moment of pure terror. But somewhere along the way, we stopped listening. The noise of the world drowned out the subtle notes, the quiet harmonies that once guided us. We became so focused on the chaos, on the fire, that we forgot to hear the music in it.
In a world that often feels like it’s burning down around us, it’s easy to lose ourselves in the flames. We search for meaning in the destruction, for a savior to pull us from the wreckage. But what if the answer isn’t in the extinguishing of the fire, but in the music that the fire creates?
Every crackle, every roar of the blaze, is part of the symphony of life. It’s a reminder that, while everything is temporary, there is beauty even in destruction. The music of life doesn’t stop when the world is on fire; in fact, it might be when it’s at its loudest.
But to hear it, we have to listen. Truly listen. We have to let go of the idea that music is only what we hear with our ears. Music is in the way the stars align, the way the earth spins, the way we connect with each other in moments of joy and sorrow. It’s in the memories that flood back with a scent, in the feelings that linger long after the eyes have faded from view.
Maybe the world is always on fire, in one way or another. But if we stop and listen, we might just find that the fire is part of the song. And in that song, there is a harmony that can carry us through, that can remind us that even in the ashes, there is something worth saving.
So, the next time you feel the world closing in, when the flames seem too high to overcome, pause. Listen for the music. It’s there, in the quiet spaces between the chaos, waiting to be heard. And in that music, you might just find the strength to keep going, to keep dancing in the fire.
Everything burns. But from the ashes, new melodies rise. And maybe, just maybe, that’s where the real beauty lies.
