Growing up, there were lots of cartoons that I enjoyed and even some after I was “grown up”. Here are the Top Five Cartoon Characters of All Time, in my not so humble opinion.
Number 5
This cell is from Bats in the Belfry, the 1942 Rudolf Ising MGM animated cartoon, featuring three bats that live in a bell tower. They talk about how much the bell ringing drives them nuts. This cartoon, for some reason, sticks in my head. I enjoy seeing it every time it comes on, especially the little guy.
Number 4
Next up, is Foghorn Leghorn, a rooster bent on mischief in the barnyard. One of his catch phrases was, “That’s a joke… I say, that’s a joke, son.”, a phrase I use to this day. A lot of the jokes were a product of the 1950’s; while dated, you can still find humor in them today.
Number 3
This would be a robot named GIR, sent to earth with his master, Zim, to pave the way for an invasion. Well, that’s what Zim thinks, where in all actuallity, Zim’s superiors are just trying to get rid of him. They saddle Zim with GIR, a cobbled together robot servant that has a complete inability to focus on his instructions for long periods of time. He usually displays a complete lack of cogent thought, making him generally useless and sometimes hazardous to Zim, although he occasionally offers genuinely useful insights into Zim’s activities. My favorite part is early in the series where he sings the “Doom Song”, which goes on forever.
Number 2
Where would the world be without Bugs Bunny? I’ve often wondered that as I recall lines that were said over the years by this rascal of a rabbit. I often quote him when I do something wrong, saying, “I must have made a wrong turn at Albuquerque.”
Number 1
And my number one favorite Cartoon Character of all time is The Brain of Pinky and the Brain. I was always amused by this rodents ever failing attempts to take over the world. He is supposed to be the smart one, but I think Pinky out does him in that department most of the time with pure common sense. It was great fun and still is whenever I catch them on the Boomerang Network.
Well, that wraps up my little take on Cartoon Characters. Please note: all character images are copyrighted by their owners, use of their likenesses here is just a homage to all the work they did in bringing these characters to life and giving everyone some joy.
